Very Interesting GDI Injector Damage! Posted by

This vehicle had an over fueling problem that under high pressure looked like a small leak, but once tested under Low pressure, it was more than obvious why the vehicle had a problem. We examined the injector filter which showed no damage so we were pretty sure no debris from the fuel system had made its way into the injector. The fact that the vehicle had an over fueling problem before the injector was removed also eliminated damage to the injector during removal which are the 2 main causes of injectors leaking or becoming stuck open. We were determined to identify the cause of the problem and upon closer inspection under our microscope, we saw damage to the orifice plate that we suspect was caused during installation at the factory.

Although the issue has been identified and a new injector will now be installed, the problem for the vehicle is that excessive fuel could have possibly washed the bores, emulsified the oil, damaged the main bearings, damaged the catalyst and carboned up the exhaust and inlet valves. Further investigation of the combustion chamber was recommended to this customer.
